SUPPORTWING-APPARATUS 1894 LILIENTHAL EDITION |
The support-wing apparatus was a result of Lilienthal`s wish to try appliances which should generate a more stable flight of his gliders. The so called "Vorflügel" or supporting-wings have been moveable surfaces in front of the main wings. These surfaces have been kept in an "open" position by rubber cords. During normal flight situations the flaps got into their "closed" position by the force of the flow of the wind, what resulted in a completely closed mainwing. If the glider came in a flight situation where the nose dropped, the support-wings opened what resulted in a uppward force to bring back the glider into normal flight situation. Later this glider was used as a carrier for other appliences to reach changes in flight directions. |
